“I found that the world is no more or less superficial than it has been. Everyone’s identity or idea of beauty so to speak is based on how they’re perceived by others. I think a big thing this year has been,of course, the lashes, the makeup, the hair, and everything like that which is typical; It’s always been around, but as far as in 2015, I’ve just noticed more plastic surgery. Everyone wants the big butts, everyone wants the big lips, which has not always been the thing. That used to be frowned upon. You were ugly if you had hips and a butt. You were ugly if your lips were big. You were ugly if your nose was big, and now you have people who contour their nose. They get their lips pumped up, just so their lips can be bigger. You know, it’s kind of like the reverse thing, which is not always a negative.
It’s just as African American women, it used to be frowned upon, but now it’s like, “she’s beautiful, look at her butt.” And now, some people who don’t have that, they try to make it."
Q:How Does That Make You Feel?
I’d be lying if I said it didn’t affect me at all. Because everyone wants to feel like they’re perceived a certain way. You want your waste to be snatched, and you know, my waste isn’t snatched, but it’s ok, so you kind of look at those sorts of things and you get caught up ,but I don’t feel like it controls my image. It’s one of those things where I’m always trying to figure out what I can do to make sure that I fit into that image. I feel like people would be lying if they said they were just ok with 100% of who they are. Society is always putting some type of pressure to make you feel some type of way.
