Here are a few things that I’ve personally asked for and taken advantage of that may make a world of a difference to my fellow goal getters:
1. "Can you increase my credit limit?"
TIP: Most lenders will increase your limit automatically if you are aggressively making scheduled payments, but if you're applying for additional credit, a good time to do so is after about 6 months to 1 year of consecutive on-time payments, or after you’ve received some financial increase, i.e a raise in salary or income. This shows your lender that you are earning more and will be able to handle the additional credit given to you. Another reason to do this is to increase your credit score, as it will naturally decrease your credit utilization.
There’s levels to this.
2. "Can You Lower my APR Rate?"
TIP: Before applying for a new credit card, look up the average APR rates for those cards and compare them, determining what you can get with your credit score. After about 6 months, call your credit card company and ask for a lower rate. Don’t worry, they’ll probably give it to you, unless you’re mean over the phone ;)
3. "Is It possible to switch my payment due date?"
TIP: if you’re ever in a position where you’re strapped for cash, call your lender BEFORE your bill is due and let them know. You may be surprised at the provisions they may be able to make if it’s not a reoccurring instance. This will save you and your credit some very unnecessary stress.
4. "I Didn't buy those shoes. Can you take this off my card?"
TIP: If you make a purchase at a janky corner store, unknown merchant, or are spending a large amount of money, always use your credit card. If something goes down, you're likely covered by the card's insurance, and these people will FIGHT.FOR.YOU.
5. "I've been loyal in this relationship. What do I get out of this?"
If you’re not already automatically linked with some sort of rewards program, you are completely losing, and not working this system to your advantage!!
Mileage is my personal favorite, but there’s also cash back and cash-in systems. Don’t be afraid to ask for a rewards that will pay you for paying them.
